What Are Crypto Narratives (and Why They Move Markets)
A narrative in crypto is the story that a group of tokens shares, the reason capital rotates into them together. "AI coins", "real-world assets (RWA)", "ETF plays", "memecoins" and "layer 2s" are all narratives. In a market driven heavily by attention, the dominant narrative often matters more than any single project's fundamentals.
Why narratives move price
Crypto capital is mobile and momentum-driven. When a story catches on, money floods the tokens attached to it, lifting the whole group, this is sector rotation. Being early to a heating narrative is one of the highest-reward, highest-risk games in the market, because narratives can fade as fast as they form.
How to track narratives
- Watch which themes dominate headlines and social volume.
- Track net sentiment per narrative, not just mentions.
- Look for narratives that are accelerating, rising fast from a low base.
- Notice when an old narrative cools, capital has to go somewhere.
The risk
Narratives are reflexive: the story pumps the price, and the rising price reinforces the story, until it doesn't. Manufactured hype and coordinated shilling can make a narrative look stronger than the real interest behind it. That's why measuring the quality of the attention, source diversity, engagement, tone, matters as much as the raw volume.
